Energy performance of architectural heritage: characteristics of the historic buildings in Palermo

The current researches on the energy and environmental improvement of historic architecture aim to develop strategies respectful of its aesthetic and material features. This requires a deep knowledge of the characters strictly connected to a local context. This paper focuses on the historic architecture of Palermo and analyses, among its features, those which particularly influence its energy and environmental performance. For this purpose the building typologies introduced by the urban regulations can be useful for a categorization on the basis of the most recent European researches.
Sustainability in the restoration and management of the historic architecture in Palermo

This research investigates the energy and environmental sustainability in the restoration and conservation of historic buildings. It focuses on the architectural heritage of Palermo, which can be a significant case study for the Mediterranean area. Its objective is to analyse the current energy performance of this historic architecture and its potential for energy improvement. Therefore, it aims at proposing a methodology to combine the enhancement of energy and environmental performances of the historic architecture of Palermo with the need of its material and aesthetic conservation, in the frame of the current regulations.

Per contemperare il miglioramento delle prestazioni energetiche e ambientali dell'architettura storica con l'esigenza della sua conservazione, è necessario analizzare le caratteristiche termofisiche dei materiali e degli elementi tecnici che la connotano. Tuttavia la disponibilità di pochi dati in merito si somma alle disomogeneità tipiche della costruzione storica e alle difficoltà di analisi ad esse connesse.
